Samples of service deployments performed by SECO

May 2016 - Engine service on board: Scheduled 32.000h engine overhaul MAN 32/40

In Mai 2016 - sailing from Spain to New York - we´ve carried out a 32,000 hour maintenance on a MAN 32/40 engine.

On our arrival, the engine was already stopped and disassembled by the crew. All main bearings and connecting rod bearings we´ve replaced by new once. Cylinder heads, cylinder liners and pistons were replaced with components that have been reconditioned before in our workshop in Quedlinburg. The connecting rods and piston pins we´ve tested during the sail and reinstalled them.

April 2016 - Engine service on board: Scheduled 32.000h engine overhaul MAN 27/38

In April 2016 - sailing from Spain to Norfolk (USA) - we´ve carried out a 32,000 hour maintenance on a MAN 27/38 engine.

We started this job with the shutdown of the running engine. All main bearings and connecting rod bearings were replaced by new once. Cylinder heads, cylinder liners and pistons were replaced with components that have been reconditioned before in our workshop in Quedlinburg. The connecting rods and piston pins we´ve tested during the sail and reinstalled them.

Engine service at power plant: Overhaul of MaK M32-engines

At a power plant in Asia, a total of 6 engines MaK M32 were overhauled under the expert leadership of an experienced supervisor of MMS.

After disassembling all cylinder heads, pistons and cylinder liners, these components' contact surfaces were inspected at the motor block and reworked. In parallel, the cylinder heads were completely dismantled and cleaned. All single parts such as valves, valve springs, rotocaps and also the valve seat rings were carefully examined, measured and exchanged in case of need.

The same applied to the disassembled pistons and cylinder liners. No longer useable engine components could also be replaced with new piston crowns and cylinder liners manufactured by SECO. Here, it should be mentioned that the customer had already made very positive experiences with our piston crowns and cylinder liners in WearResist®-execution in advance to this overhaul service.

Engine service on board: Replacement of crankshaft and major overhaul of engine type MAN 23/30H

For this field service, SECO provided with a supervisor as well as with mechanics. On board of a total of 3 vessels, identical in construction, several auxiliary engines of engine model MAN 23/30H were repaired and major overhauled. Besides the exchange of two crankshafts, the complete motor block of one engine was replaced as well.

The special aspect of this mission was the lack of reliable information regarding the demand of necessary spare parts and its quantities. In consultation with our customer, SECO arranged an extensive spare parts selection and organized all logistics. The charging of all spare parts later on resulted in the actual consumption – controlled and confirmed by the chief engineer on board of the vessel.

Engine service at power plant: Inspection of engines type MaK M43

For the performance inspection of several engines type MaK M43, the motor experts sent out from MMS were supported by SECO. The aim of this job was to develop a recommendation for management action regarding cost reduction and performance improveent of the power plant.

To have the idea on the initial state of the power plant as objective as possible, all data already existing was knowingly excluded. To determine all characteristics of the cumbustion process, the ignition pressure and its exact timing, the indexing process of each station followed up right after. Finally, the measuring of residual oxygen in the exhaust gas system of each engine for the evaluation of the combustion quality was carried out.

In conclusion and based on all available data, the MMS-specialists created a recommendation for action to the attention of the power plant management.

Engine service on board: Scheduled engine overhaul of type MAN 28/32H

This service was directed completely by SECO. The preventive exchange of all pistons and cylinder liners and the application of SECO-products is worth to mention. The used pistons as well as the cylinder liners of engine type MAN 28/32H were sent to our premises. Right after arriving at our site, the components first were cleaned, inspected and finally supplied back to the customer to be re-installed in another engine.

This way of processing / this procedure – the continuous exchange and/or re-use of components still functioning – has proven to be successful and is providing significant cost advantages and a total cost transparency to our customers. For this reason and if required, SECO is able to offer complete, so-called "swing-sets", in various extents of supplies. The real consumption of parts – the removal and the assembly of supplied components – will be performed under the control of the customer.

Engine service at power plant: Different repair jobs together with engine failure root cause analysis Wartsila W46

To support our colleagues of MMS, SECO provided with extensive services for a scheduled overhaul of engines type Wartsila W46. Besides all planned repair and maintenance work, the customer also ordered an investigation of a previous serious engine damage with us. (left picture)
